Social medias like del.icio.us, StumbleUpon and Digg are capable of luring in huge amount of traffic in a short period of time. However, with the rising numbers of blogs and sites, these social medias users seem too little around the internet. Too many blogs to visit, too little time.
As I am a college student, I hardly have any time to post and optimize myself up to become the "top users" to acquire attentions. If you are like me, I believe you will hardly have any time - especially those who have child to take care of or maybe a day-time 9 to 5 job.Thinking of it...What you saying is that these traffic from social media is not valuable? - But...
Nope. I believed anything that drives traffic to your site or blog are valuable. Eventually, social medias help you to increase your reader size - including your blog subscriber.
Bookmarks like del.icio.us enable readers to return on your blog for more.
Social medias also help you to launch new linkbait - which I think is pretty effective.
I know you are a busy person - but let me teach you some of my tips :
StumbleUpon is by far the best and most effective social medias that I've used of all. With a little effort (almost none), you can get truckloads of free traffic to your blog - almost instantly!
You don't need to make friends there or join thousands of different communities to promote your articles. All you need is a good quality contents with proper headline.
Once you blog posts are stumbled, you will be surprised on how it will snowball more traffic - and some people even claimed it to be VIRAL!
To easiest way is to sign up with StumbleUpon, get their link code, paste in in each of your post (or you can post in post section in single php. if you are using WordPress) to ease your readers to stumble it.
*I highly recommend my readers to use ShareIt Plugins which you can download from various websites. Even Darren Rowse of Problogger used it.
If you have some time,
I recommend you try less "major" social medias like Sphinn, DZone and Furl. These social medias might not be driving you thousands of traffic or helping you higher in Google's ranks, but bear in mind these minor social medias can brings you to the big pages of major social medias.
For example, let say I have this post that is pretty awesome and people from Sphinn loved it. The Sphinn users think I'm great and decided to bookmark me on del.icio.us. Thus, I will appear on front page of del.icio.us' lists.
SMO - What the heck?
I know you have heard of SEO which stands for search engine optimization. So, I made one up for social media optimization. SMO!
Here are some tips:
- Place your bookmarking icons or links that your readers would most likely see - preferably at the end of the post and before the comments.
-Never stuff too many icons of different social medias. Your readers might get confuse and just click away. I used ShareIt which is most efficient, simple and can I say...elegant?
